It went from some 10 customers in the first weeks to around 30 per week in the following weeks. At first we were able to supply all parts, including a Jackson tuning cap but as demand increased sourcing more VCs became difficult but, we knew one guy -"Southend Bill" white transist van man who turned up with a box of 50! To save time, we even made up a kit pack including a piece of wood and they went like hot cakes! Great days! Besides the Ladybird book on constructing a Transistor Radio , in they also published a follow-up book entitled: "Simple Electronics" which contained 10 simple transistor projects, aimed at young people.
This time, the book showed a young girl with a project! However, unlike the Transistor Radio book, which was illustrated by B. Robinson the follow-up book was illustrated by Roland Berry, although the graphic style was almost identical. This graphic style was not first used by the Ladybird books, in fact a similar style was used in a Hamlyn paperback book called Electronics by Roland Worcester and illustrated by "Design Practitioners" see pics.
The Hamlyn had a number of reprints. We had all the parts in stock at Watts Radio and I built a demo version of the Ladybird radio. I used a ready made Weyrad ferrite rod coil. I've still got the Hamlyn paperback "Electronics". Well thumbed and much read! I remember trying to build that transistor amplifier as a youngster and it didn't work for me.
But in those days my only sources of parts were what I could scrounge or retrieve from old sets. I probably fried dozens of germanium devices unsoldering them! Oh, so much more fun than a 'DS' some portable game machine, I have seen one in use. Kids and adults should must? That may solve our shortage of engineers. Originally Posted by camtechman. My word, that brings back memories. As I recently discovered, I even still have the very book! I think I built the whole thing as per the book, then I then built just the front end from it and coupled it to the AF amplifier section of an otherwise dead radio to get more umph. I seem to remember it being somewhat unstable if you approached it. A bit of guess work in optimising the tuning and regen as things would change when you moved away, but a great project for which I am grateful. Well done Ladbybird!
